Time for a change...![]() My game closet transformation came about for many reasons, but the main inspiration (drum roll please)...the 4 year old decided to get creative with the scissors. Sorry, Spider-Man pjs! My goal in life is to raise my children to be self-sufficient. As a rule, I store their things (plates, cups, toys I want them to play with) within easy reach so that they can help themselves. With my oldest we've never had an issue, but my youngest it seems has quite the penchant for mischief. Needless to say, it was time to do some reorganizing.
Step. 3 Make it Fabulous & FunctionalAfter staging ALL the things, I measured (this is key!) and ordered a few products to really make this closet shine. AFTERTa Da! I give you a more fabulous and functional space. The ProductsWhen it comes to deciding what products to use in a space, I always shop the home first to see what can be repurposed. I corralled my Sterilite bins for the Play-Doh and Marble runs. I love that the latches keep the bin lid in place (and not flying in my face). I also re-used these Clear Sweater Bins from Made by Design. They are perfect for storing the smaller puzzle packs, games, and decks of cards and they stack. I swapped these Target dollar bin deals (pictured below) for these Slim Plastic Shoe bins. Our marker and crayon collections were quickly outgrowing this cute little caddies. The shoe bins I scored coordinate with the sweater bins that I already owned. They stack neatly, they're affordable, and bonus: if you find a stray marker or crayon you can just slip it through the handle opening without pulling the entire bin out. What's not to love? And if you'll notice... the scissors are tucked away on the side and out of reach of my 4 yr old (score!). Next, I removed the majority of the puzzles and boardgames from their packaging and stored them in these Instagram-favorite zipper pouches. I opted for the fun bright colors instead of all black because honestly, who doesn't love a rainbow? The pouches are such a space-saver and they nestle perfectly in these baskets from Target. Oversized games and puzzles stayed in their boxes. Finally, all of the learning tablets, travel games, and any bulky items were stored in these beautiful bins. Buh-bye visual clutter! And that's it! 1. Set a GoalTip #1: set a realistic goal (emphasis on realistic) and write. it. down. Committing your goal to paper gives you clear focus and a consistent visual reminder of what you are working toward. It doesn’t have to be pretty - even a post-it note will do - just slap that puppy up on a wall or somewhere you will see it every day. The bathroom mirror or the fridge are great places! Don’t forget to include action steps on how you’re going to make it happen. These are your roadmap to making your goal a reality. 2. Commit to 30 DaysDeveloping new habits that will help you stay organized isn’t going to miraculously happen over night. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all! So what’s the secret? Tip #2: Commit to 30 days and make it a routine. Just one month is all it takes to develop a new habit, but the key is consistency! Perform the same action every day, at the same time, and in same place. Whether it’s sorting your mail right when you come home or creating a better system for tackling the laundry, just be consistent about the “when” and the “where” (and remind yourself about the “why!”). You can even track your progress with my FREE handy-dandy habit tracker. Click here to snag your free habit tracker and grab a bonus decluttering checklist while you are at it! My gifts to you. 3. Keep it SimpleTip #3: Keep it simple, people. I believe submitting to the principle of “less is more” will take you far in life and it’s particularly applicable to organizing. One of the easiest ways to stay organized is to simply have less stuff. It’s a no-brainer, really. Here’s some food for thought: Did you know the typical American only wears 20% of the clothes in their closet and kids typically play with the same 12 toys? Check facts. Next time you are shopping ask yourself: 1) Do I love it? and 2) Is it worth my time and energy to keep it? 4. Give Items HomesTip #4: A place for everything and everything in its (labeled) place. The biggest reason reason people cannot stay organized is because they failed to designate a “home” for their items. Think about it. How many times have you picked up something and thought, “Hmm, where should I put this? I know I’ll just shove it in this drawer or the back of the closet!”? Stop, please. As you are organizing be sure to create a place for your item to live and be thoughtful about it. Items that are seldom used should be stored in harder to reach areas and more frequently used items should be stored with easy access in mind. If you find yourself struggling with where to put something, perhaps it doesn’t need to be in your house at all. And last, but not least - label, label, label! Labels not only help identify the contents of a container, but they also tell you (cough* or your children/spouse) where things belong. 5. Organize TogetherTip #5: Make it a party. And by that I mean, don’t do it alone. Keeping your house organized will feel like an uphill battle if you are the only one helping to maintain the new and fabulous systems you’ve put into place. Get your kids/spouse/significant other/roommate/pets (jk) involved too! Sorting toys and doing the laundry (yes, I said laundry) can be turned into a fun game. Putting laundry in the hamper is target practice at my house. Kids really do love helping and feeling like they’ve accomplished something. It’s not always rainbows🌈 and sunshine☀️, but it can’t hurt to try, ammiright?!
You know that horrible dream where your always perfect, super judgy frenemy from high school calls and says, “Surprise! I’m 5 minutes away!” and your house looks like a hot mess? But then you realize you’re not dreaming - this is real life and it’s actually your (even more judgmental) mother-in-law?!
No biggie. Because everything that lies before you (as you quickly scan your living room) has been designated a “home” and you can rectify this situation faster than Mary Poppins can snap her fingers.
Why? Because you. are. organized. When everything in your home has its place, restoring order is a virtual breeze. This is the real-life magic of the KonMari Method.

I’m a professional organizer so my house MUST be completely spotless all of the time, right? Um, that’s a no.
Let’s face it; unless you own absolutely zero things or spend zero time at home, you’re going to have to deal with clutter – it’s a fact of life. The phrase should be, “Nothing is certain, but death, taxes, & clutter.” Whether it’s the mail, your kids’ toys, or SOMEBODY not putting their laundry away (ahem), things tend to pile up. Thankfully, smart and enterprising people out there designed some super handy products to help keep said clutter in-check. The best products to banish clutter...
Clutter can creep up anywhere, but I’m going to highlight some of the most common problem areas. Let’s take a deep-dive into the best products to overcome clutter!
There’s just something about the smell of new paper and freshly sharpened pencils that gives me a little thrill (tell me I'm not alone here, people). If getting back to the grind makes you a little angsty, fear not - here are my top 5 tips to get you organized & ready for school... I grew up in the 80s - the age of processed everything, disposable everything, and artificial everything. I honestly didn't think too much about it until I became a mom. My eyes were opened. I became acutely aware of the food I was putting in my body and the cleaning products I used around the house. If I wouldn't feed XYZ to my kid, why should I be eating it? If these hardcore household cleaners aren't good for baby, should I be using them at all? Anyone have the same experience??? So I changed.
Over the years I've adopted new habits to fuel my choice to live "cleaner" and here are my top 10 tips. It's time to clean out the fridge again, but wait...you are confronted by the age-old question: Is this still good? (if you're asking, hmm probably not) Find the answers to all of your burning questions below. |
